I grew up in my grandmother’s house in a Dutch-influenced village on Maluku Island, Indonesia. She owned a little bakery, and the fragrance of the baked stuff filled our home every morning.
The name Kue Keju, which means cheesecake in Indonesian, reflects both that heritage and the mix of cultures that shaped my childhood. “Kue” comes from the Malay word for cake, while “Keju” is borrowed from the Dutch word for cheese.
Each cheesecake is baked to order, has 18 cm diameter and weights around 1.3 kg.
